Chapter 12
TUESDAY MORNING, PETE walked into the salon. âTheyâre finally gone. So, what do you think of my new glasses?â
Maggie looked up and smiled. âThey look fantastic.â
Pete stuck his hip out in a silly supermodel pose and pointed at his glasses.
Maggie laughed.
âThank ya very much,â Pete said in his Elvis voice. âYour good husband G took me to the mall and got me these fantastic frames. Donât I look smart? Donât suppose I could get a new haircut to go with the new glasses? This stuff on the sides is ruining my look.â
Maggie patted the chair. âHave a seat. So Pastor left, huh?â
âDonât you know? Arenât you his secretary?â he said, his voice adrip with sarcasm.
âThatâll be enough out of you. I guess I did know he was leaving sometime today. Whoâd he end up taking with him?â
Pete sat down. âJust Dwight. I guess Dwight was the only success story.â As Pete said âsuccess story,â he made air quotes around the words. âAll I know is itâs going to be so nice with both of them gone.â
âNow, behave yourself,â Maggie tried.
âThat dudeâs cray cray,â Pete said.
âWhich dude?â
âDwight of course. I donât think Chris is crazy. I donât even think heâs a bad guy. Heâs pretty smart. Preaches good. I just donât think he should be working with the homeless. He doesnât like us.â
âI think heâs a bad guy,â Tiny offered from the couch, where he was looking at a comic book.
âAnyway,â Pete continued, âDwight is certifiable. I mean, talking to himself nuts.â
âWhat does he say?â Maggie asked.
âI donât know. I donât want to know. Iâm just telling you not to be alone with that guy.â
âDonât worry, Pete. Tiny and I have that covered.â Tiny looked up. Maggie smiled at him. Tiny blushed.
Gertrude appeared in the doorway just then.
âOh, hey, Gert,â Maggie said.
âDo you have an opening?â Gertrude asked. Gertrude and Maggie were old friends. They had been in the shelter together when they were both homeless. Since then, Gertrude had gotten her own place, but she still came for the occasional snip or worship service.
âFor you, always,â Maggie said, âif you donât mind hanging out for a few minutes while I finish up with Pete here.â
âSure thing,â Gertrude said and plopped down on the sofa. âSo who is cray cray?â
âGeesh, Gertrude,â Pete said, âyou got the room bugged or somethinâ?â
âNope. Sound carries. I could hear you flibbertigibbets clear down the hall. So, whoâs cray cray?â
âWhat did she just call us?â Pete asked.
Maggie rolled her eyes. âI have no idea. Some Gertrudism. Either way, we probably shouldnât be calling anyone cray cray. And we were talking about a guest here. Heâs a new believer and heâs going through some stuff.â
Pete snorted. âYeah, stuff all right.â
âLike what?â Gertrude prodded.
âLet it go, Gert,â Maggie tried.
âNot in my nature,â Gertrude said. âSo whatâs the deal with this guy?â
âHeâs some kind of war hero, and it apparently did some damage to his psyche,â Pete said.
âWait a minute. Is this the guy you had on TV?
